mailed-by gmail.com Well, so far he has just told me about his alliance with England and how he's going to doublecross Rob. He claims Rob doesn't know anything about it and won't see it coming. I think they are going to take Denmark from him. The idea is to get England on to the mainland so England can mount an attack on France. They have it all worked out.
As far as what he's suggested to me, he just said that he would help me get XXX and that he expected me to help his XXXX get to XXXX. But he said to wait on it because we couldn't do any of it until 1903 or 1904 anyway after he was finished with Germany. - Hide quoted text -

You're right about that, but before I committ to anything I think you should tell me what kinds of things Russia has suggested to you. I want to know if there is anything there we can exploit.

I'm currently allied with just Russia. I've had conversations with most other countries but only Russia has really talked about working together and made suggestions.
If we do this thing, then yes we will have a final alliance. If we play it right, it will look like we are fighting with each other for long enough to keep XXX unaware of our alliance. Then he won't see it coming.

In the interest of full disclosure, why don't we lay our cards on the table. If we are going to work together, I need to know who you are working with and I need to know that our alliance supercedes those alliances and we share information with each other.
Every nation that believes in two moves a week should unite and stand together against the slow and dim witted Turks. Europe stands united against TURKEY!! Until the Turk is dead we are ALL ALLIES!!

These are the only ones I received. Not surprising that I didn't get one from Chonko, Josh, Wayne, or Brandon, so I won't wait on those guys. But thank you for writing them and I hope they are of some instruction to the rest of us.
Italy Country: Italy
Commander: Peter Russo

Statment: In my mind, the whole game can be surmised in the two maps enclosed. Poor, small Italy somehow got 3 builds in one move! To be honest, it seems like I was the only one who knew how this game is actually won. Everyone else in the game seemed to be playing by telling people exactly what he was going to do and then actually doing it which is honorable but not usually useful OR by assuming a bold-face lie somehow constituted diplomacy. Diplomacy consists of having multiple sets of possible alliances and then choosing between when the time is right ( i.e., calculated betrayals). And in fact, I did this only once with rbdt ( sorry rbdt ). However, this one act of real diplomacy was really the determining factor in the game. The Josh/Wayne alliance never wavered ( which, if it had failed, might have caused Wayne to call Josh TWICE a day, so maybe Josh was playing some real-life diplomacy ). Jay got greedy in year one with Austria which ( looking at Austria's position on the map ) turned into a disaster for Jay. Granted, this was our first game, so Jay's naivety about Austria can be overlooked. RBDT was probably going to turn on me, but I turned on him first. In summary, Italy/Russia's victory was due to alot of factors, but everyone else's mistakes were much greater than any grand design or strategy I could ever possibly come up with.
Austria
Drawing Austria in Game # 1 was disheartening because I knew Austria would be the hardest country to win with in the game of diplomacy. I had to worry about 4 players Italy, Russia, Germany and Turkey.
At the start of the game before the Spring 1901 moves I had preliminary non-aggression alliance with both Germany and Russia and talked briefly with Italy and Turkey. My game plan from the beginning was to be greedy and go after 3 builds. My thoughts were if Austria did not build quickly that I would only last a year or two.
Spring 1901 moves:
Austria: A Budapest - Serbia. Austria: F Trieste - Albania. Austria: A Vienna - Galicia.
I finally decided on the Balkan Gambit with the Galician variation to gain virtual assurance of GRE and SER while giving up the ability to defend against Italy and also to have two units on RUM but unfortuantely I bounced with Russia at Gal. But my hopes for obtaining 3 builds was not lost as I tried to convince both Italy and Turkey to be my allies. Italy even coordinated a conference call between Turkey, Italy and me on Feb 27:

After the conference call my hopes were high and I was smelling the 3 builds. I was believing that I could be a major player in the game. I even received emails from both Italy and Turkey telling me the moves that they sent in for their fall 1901 orders so that I would be assured of getting 3 builds:
The moment of truth came on March 5th when Dave emailed us that the Fall 1901 moves were posted. I was prepared to build 2 fleets and 1 army but the unthinkable happened I was betrayed by both Italy and Turkey. They blindsided me and I wasn't even aware of it. They got me with my pants down and as you can see it wasn't pretty:
I congratulate both Italy and Russia for winning game #1 and for Turkey for staying in the game for so long. Also thank you David Hill for being game master.
PS
I was happy that Turkey got screwed by both Russia and Italy but I was disappointed that Italy didn't get screwed by Russia.

This was my first time playing diplomacy, and I was a little worried about getting into something without knowing how to play. So I tried to learn a little about openings by reading The Diplomatic Pouch. I recommend it to all players if you haven't already found it.
I did my best to ally with Russia, since we looked like a strong strategic alliance. I also tried to befriend Peter (italy) partly because he seemed like a smart player, and partly because he was willing to spend a long time chatting about plots and counter-plots. I tried to make Jay (austria) an ally as well, since he seemed like a good friend to have as my potential Balkans Rival.
Ultimately Russia and Italy and I became an alliance, though it was with a heavy heart that I stabbed Jay. He seemed like he could have been a strong and faithful partner. As it turned out, I might have been better off sticking with Jay. Instead we killed him, and R/I/T was carved in stone (in a way). I tricked Russia out of the black sea, which proved to be the smartest move (maybe the only one) that I made in the game.
Our allied nations all became stronger, and it was just a matter of time before we stabbed each other. I made a plan to stab peter, and would have gained a strong advantage. But i thought I would stick to the alliance "for one more move..." hoping that our friendship could benefit me a little more. Of course that was the season where italy stabbed me, ultimately taking away any chance for victory.
Lucky for me, the other nations were all being chewed up by infighting. By the time I got it in the pooper, i still had a very defensible position, which was enough to last till the end of the game. I think it was a good finish from a novice player, but more importantly, I had an amazing time playing, and sweating about moves. Thanks to all the people who played, and thanks to Dave for being the Game Master of such a fun experience.
Lessons Learned:
1 The Black Sea is king. 2 Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line. 3 Don't be too greedy 4 Stab first. Stab hard. No regrets.

Beware! Germany and Italy are cooperating! I shared information with Italy and ONLY Italy that got back to Germany. They have an alliance and are working together. Be careful what you tell Italy, it may end up on the front page of the Nazi Times!
The great and noble people of Austria deeply regret the present turmoil amongst the European states. We are a united people who seek only peaceful coexistance with our fellow man. However, we must react to the newly volatile and agressive situation at hand.
It seems that Europe is facing an all out war. Austria is saddened at this belligerance, and offers a blanket peace proposal to all involved nations. That having been said, any agression against our soverign lands and people will be seen as nothing short of an act of war, and will be dealt with accordingly. We will therefore defend our homeland by establishing a defensive buffer zone in the surrounding neutral provinces.
We encourage all nations to enter into peaceful negotiations with Austria. Though we seek peace, we understand that the balance of power in the world can sometimes only be maintained through the judicious use of milita ry might. Any nations interested in achieving a beneficical pact of alliegance or non-agression with Austria should direct their treaties, etc, to our ministry of defence.
Signed,
His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty, RBDT By the Grace of God, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary and Bohemia
